Foreign Secretary: Bangladesh party to One Belt One Road initiative

Bangladesh is a party to One Belt One Road initiative floated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, said Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.

Shahidul was speaking at a programme on regional connectivity at a city hotel yesterday.

He was responding to a remark of Chinese Deputy Chief of Mission Qu Guangzhou who was invited to programme to share Chinese experience.

One Belt One Road is a Chinese framework for organising multinational economic development primarily in Eurasia through two main components, the land-based Silk Road and oceangoing Maritime Silk Road.

It was unveiled by Chinese leader Xi Jinping in September and October 2013.

During the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to China, the issue was discussed between the two leaders.

The foreign secretary said Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor is almost at final stage.

The second joint study group meeting of BCIM was held in Bangladesh last year and the third meeting is expected to be held in India this year.

Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute Director Mostafa Abid Khan said the trade costs including transportation and trade facilitation costs in South Asian countries is the highest in the world.

He said in most of the cases regional blocs focus on trade but not connectivity and it causes problems.

Centre for Policy Dialogue Research Fellow Towfiqul Islam Khan said Asian countries need to connect through all modes including rail, road and air.

Chinese Deputy Chief of Mission Qu Guangzhou said Beijing is ready to cooperate with other countries to improve connectivity.

Asia needs $730 billion by 2020 to invest in infrastructure and it is impossible for a single country to manage fund for improving own infrastructure, he said.
