A man and his son sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out at Sut Tala Slum in the capital’s Mohakhali early yesterday.
Abu Bakar, 55, with around 40% burn injuries and his son Kawsar, 20, with 25% burn injury were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of fire service headquarters control room Enayet Hossin said fire had broken out around 5am from electric short circuit. The father and his son received burn injuries while they were in asleep.
On receiving information, six units of firefighters rushed to the area and doused the fire after two-hours’ efforts, he added.
The officials estimated that the loss might be around Tk14 lakh from the fire. Around 30 shanties at the slum were gutted in the fire.
Meanwhile, another fire has broken out at a five-storey building in the capital’s Nayapaltan area. Fire service control room telephone operator Irin Parvin said the fire had originated on the third floor of Kashfia Plaza around 5:30pm. A total of 10 fire fighting units brought the fire under control around 6pm, she said.
However, the reason behind the fire has not yet been determined.
