Prisoner allegedly commits suicide in Jessore

A prisoner jailed in a case filed under the women and children repression prevention act has allegedly committed suicide in Jessore Central Jail.

Deceased Mohammad Babu, 27, was in jail from May 13.

He was taken to the Jessore Medical College Hospital prison guards around 11:20am Friday where the duty doctor Kajal Mallick declared him dead.

The doctor said they were yet to ascertain if it was a suicide or not as there were some marks on Babu's neck. It can be determined after autopsy, he added.

When contacted, Prison Officer Mohammad Mohiuddin admitted of the death but was unwilling to discuss about the reason of the death.

The jail's Senior Police Super Shajahan Hossain said Babu tried to hang himself from the staircase grill in the prison cell chamber. During the attempt the prison guards rescued him and took him to the hospital, he added.

He said departmental measures would be taken against the officers who were in-charge of that ward.
