Gulshan to get 600 more

Over 600 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed in phases on different streets under Gulshan police station to bring the area under close vigil.

Of them, 100 CCTV cameras have already been installed.

The area covers Gulshan, Baridhara and Niketan, said Dhaka Metropolitan Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah at the inaugural programme of a project named Digital Track.

The project was initiated on January 7; It is entirely being financed by local businessmen. The DMP will manage the surveillance and maintenance of the project.

The DMP boss said after Gulshan, Banani will be given the first priority before they bring Uttara of Dhaka North city under the project.

He said Dhanmondi Housing Society Leaders requested him to take the same initiative in their locality. “Gradually the whole Dhaka City will come under CCTV Surveillance.”

It will help to control traffic and catch criminals operating in the area, Asaduzzaman Miah said.

The newly elected mayor of Dhaka North Annisul Huq who attended the inauguration programme as special guest at the capital’s Lakeshore Hotel, said he wanted to take the whole Dhaka North under CCTV surveillance within five years.

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion Benazir Ahmed said this could be helpful for general people to avoid traffic jam in the city.

He further said no matter whatever the ratio of the investment is, the authority of the surveillance system must come under police department.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed inaugurated the project as the chief guest.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former election commissioner Shamsul Huda, also the chief advisor to Law and Order Coordination Committee, was also present at the programme.

Earlier, the DMP authorities told the Dhaka Tribune that the capital’s diplomatic zone including Gulshan, Baridhara and Niketon, would be brought under surveillance of 400 CCTV cameras to ensure maximum security.

The cameras, apart from functioning as regular CCTV cameras, will send beeps to the nearby police station and the control centre once any blacklisted vehicle or person or object is spotted.

Speakers of the cameras will be set up at 11 police check posts where the duty officers would be able to hear the beeps.
