International call traffic can now be monitored by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) as the High Court yesterday rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of the BTRC’s decision to monitor this traffic.
The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam passed the order after hearing arguments on the petition, BTRC’s lawyer Khandaker Reza-E-Raquib said.
International gateway operators DBL Telecom, Bangla Tel Limited and BG Tel Limited collectively submitted the petition on May 4, challenging the legality of the BTRC’s decision to run IGW operators switch (IOS) to monitor international call traffic. The petitioners argued the commission cannot create IOS to monitor call traffic without giving an IGW operators licence.
Additional Attorney General Murad Reza and Khandaker Reza-E Raquib stood for the BTRC while Ajmalul Hossain and MK Rahman stood for the petitioners.
