The bodies of a pair of three-year-old twin sisters have been found damped at a bamboo bush in Babuganj upazila of Barisal on Saturday afternoon.
The victims are Mariam Akter and Ayesha Siddika, daughters of Selim Khan, of Vuterdia village under Kedarpur union.
Locals also rescued the mother of the twin sisters, Sharmin Begum, 26, from Suganda River while she was reportedly attempting suicide.
After visiting the spot, SI Amanullah of Babuganj police station said: “Primarily we are suspecting that the mother first strangled the babies and attempted suicide.”
Shahe Alam, Babuganj police station OC, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The police recovered the bodies and admitted the mother to Babuganj upazila Health Complex under police custody.”
Selim's neighbour Akkas Hossain said Sharmin is suffering from mental illness and she might have killed the babies.
The police said investigation is underway.
