Rushanara, Tulip, Rupa win UK polls

Three British citizens of Bangladeshi origin have been elected as Member of Parliament from different constituencies in the United Kingdom general elections with blessings from the Labour party.

BBC online published the results in its live coverage of the election on Friday.

Rushanara Ali was elected from the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency, after securing 32,387 votes while the nearest candidate Matthew Smith of Conservative got 8,070.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's niece Tulip Siddiq ousted the Conservatives by securing 23,977 votes. She won from the Hampstead and Kilburn Parliamentary constituency.

Besides, Rupa Huq was also elected as an MP from the Ealing Central and Acton constituency.

She secured 22,002 votes while Angie Bray, who was contesting the election from the Conservative party, got 21,728 votes.

The results of the other five Bangladeshi-Britons who are contesting in the election were yet to be published.
