Death or life term for killing after rape

A rapist could be awarded capital punishment or life term for killing any child or woman after rape, according to a Supreme Court judgement.

Previously, the only punishment for the offence was death under the section 6 (2) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Special) Act 19.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) from Kashimpur Jail after he fell sick on Tuesday morning.

The BNP leader was shifted to BSMMU around 7:40am from Kashimpur Jail 2, said Jail Super Prasanta Kumar Banik.

Strong quake rocks Papua New Guinea

A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, and officials warned that a local tsunami was possible.

The 7.4-magnitude quake struck about 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of the town of Kokopo in northeastern Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 63 kilometers (40 miles), the US Geological Survey reported, downgrading its original estimate that the quake was magnitude 7.5 and 10 kilometers (6 miles) deep.

2 robbers killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’

Two alleged robbers have been killed in a “gunfight” with detective police in Bhutgari area under Pachbibi upazila in Joypurhat.

The deceased are Moinul Hossain Babu, 36, of Puranapoil area under Pachbibi upazila and Abdus Salam, 25, of Jagannathpur village under Fulbari upazila in Dinajpur.

Rohingya woman flees torture camp

A Rohingya woman has fled from a jungle camp near Songkhla's Padang Besar town in Thailand where she had allegedly been detained and tortured.

The villagers found Rohima Khatun, 25, near Roop Chang mountain in Padang Besar sub-district close to the jungle camp where 26 bodies were unearthed.

4 killed in Gopalganj road accident

Four people have been killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a three-wheeler on Dhaka-Barisal highway in Uttarpar area under Maksudpur upazila in Gopalganj.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.

One held with foreign currencies at Shahjalal

Customs Intelligence officials have detained a person with foreign currencies worth Tk75 lakh at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

Reyadul Islam, assistant commissioner of Customs Intelligence, told the Dhaka Tribune that the man was held around 8pm Monday.

Climbing Mount Everest this season is "almost impossible" because the routes have been damaged by avalanches triggered by last month's earthquake, officials in Nepal say.

They warn that it will take time for the routes to be remade. The government has not announced an official decision.
