Rohingya woman flees torture camp

A Rohingya woman fled from a jungle camp near Songkhla's Padang Besar town in Thailand, where she had allegedly been detained and tortured.

The villagers found Rohima Khatun, 25, near Roop Chang mountain in Padang Besar sub-district, close to the jungle camp where 26 bodies were unearthed.

Around 30 graves were also found with bodies which are believed to be of human trafficking victims, reports Bangkok Post.

Rohima was taken to Padang Besar hospital Monday afternoon.

With the help of a translator, she said: "I was beaten many times.”

Identifying herself as a Rohingya, Rohima said she was detained in the jungle camp for around four months but eventually she managed to flee.

There are around 400 people in the camp, of whom most of them are Rohingya and Bangladeshis, she added.

The 25-year-old victim said: “They said police were coming. Everybody ran. But I could not run because I was too sick to move.”

She claimed that she walked down the mountain after everyone fled the scene and later the villagers found her.

Rohima also said she had no idea about her 10-year-old daughter who was in the camp with her.

Observers believe that Rohima might have come from a different camp to the one where a mass burial site was discovered.
