Tangail municipality struggling with mosquito control

The Tangail municipality authorities have been struggling with mosquito prevention and control in the town while the menace has been driving the locals up the wall.

Many Tangail locals complained about the municipality's failure to control or eradicate mosquito infestation in the town.

Some even claimed that they had not seen municipality staff spraying insecticides in their localities for years.

They said the mosquito attacks had gotten to the level where their day-to-day lives were suffering.

“It's unbearable. My children cannot concentrate on their studies. I have tried several kinds of mosquito repellents in my house, but they did little to solve the problem,” said Advocate Ahmed Khan Bipon, resident of Biswas Betka area.

“I have not seen a single municipality staff spraying pesticides in our area in the past 15 years. It is as though they have turned a blind eye to this problem.”

His fury was shared by many other Tangail residents.

“These mosquitoes are immune to everything I use in my house. The municipality authorities have done nothing to prevent mosquitoes. They must take steps now to eradicate this problem,” said Hasanuzzaman Rony, a businessman who lives Sabalia area.

Sonya Akhter, a college student who lives in Shibnath area, said: “We are miserable. You cannot always stay inside mosquito net. But getting outside the protection is scary.”

The municipality authorities claimed they had yet to find an effective measure to control mosquitoes despite having adequate resources.

Manobendra Paul Milton, acting mayor of Tangail municipality, said: “We have equipment, manpower and budget. But we do not have to insecticide that would be most effective against mosquitoes. We are cleaning drains, coppices and ditches to reduce mosquito breeding.”
