Rizwana: Noise pollution control must to protect hearing health

Stressing the need for a shift in mindset to avoid creating unnecessary noise, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that preventing noise pollution and raising awareness can significantly reduce the risk of hearing loss.

“Hearing health is not just a personal concern but also a vital environmental and public health issue,” she said while addressing a discussion marking World Hearing Day 2025, held at the ENT and Head-Neck Cancer Hospital and Institute in Agargaon.

This year’s theme of the day is “Changing Mindsets: Empower Yourself.”

Rizwana pointed out that noise pollution is a major cause of hearing impairment, particularly in urban areas where excessive vehicle horns, industrial noise, and loudspeakers contribute to the problem.

While the government has undertaken several initiatives to curb noise pollution, she said public awareness and responsibility are equally crucial.

“We must stop unnecessary honking and excessive noise in social events and daily activities,” she said.

The event was presided over by Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury, president of the ENT and Head-Neck Cancer Hospital and Institute and former secretary.

Medical professionals, health experts, and people from various fields attended the discussion.

Experts underscored the importance of regular health check-ups, noise control, and awareness campaigns to address hearing-related issues.

Before the discussion, a colorful rally was held to mark the occasion, said a press release.
