Razzaque: Sunamganj flood-hit farmers to get incentives

The government would take steps to provide incentives to the flood-hit farmers in the haor areas of Sunamganj, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said on Tuesday.

Incentive would be given as "Boro" is the only crop in haor areas, he said, adding that the government would stand by the farmers to help them recoup the losses.

The minister made the remarks while talking to reporters after attending a meeting of the National Coordinating and Advisory Committee on Fertilizers at the Secretariat.

Replying to a question, Razzaque said: “Some 300 millimeters of rain were recorded in India in the last two days and there is a possibility of more rains on April 14 and 15. We have no control on the Nature. But we are taking measures to tackle any kind of disaster.”

Every year, 20 million tons of "Boro" paddy are produced across the country and 1.2 million tons in the haor areas.

He added that it would be a matter of serious concern if the hair’s paddy fields get damaged.

“Besides, the government breaking all previous records has been providing the highest amount of subsidy and incentive for the agriculture sector,” he said.

The minister also claimed that there was no fertilizer crisis in the country.

“Every year, there is a need for 2.6 million tons of urea, 0.75 million tons of TSP, 1.65 million tons of DAPP and 0.75 million tons of MOP fertilizers. Till today, we did not face any problem,” he said.

The minister also claimed that Bangladesh was the only country where fertilizer prices remained stable. “The price of fertilizer has increased in many countries,” he added.
