Four people, including a bus supervisor, two truck helpers, and a factory worker, were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Bogra’s Kahaloo and Nondigram upazilas from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.
The information was confirmed by Hafizar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kunderhat Highway Police Station, and Mahbubur Rahman, investigation officer of Kahaloo Police Station.
The deceased were identified as Uttam Mondal, 30, supervisor of Hanif Paribahan and son of Jitendra Nath Mondal of Komarpur village in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon; Md Hridoy, 30, a truck helper and son of Abdur Razzak of Malshun village in Adamdighi upazila of Bogra; Md Injamam, 20, another truck helper and son of Izzat Ali of Kharashni village in the Sadar upazila of Jhenaidah; and factory worker Robiul Awal Zia, 42, son of Abdur Razzak of Torotbari village in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur.
Police and locals said a Naogaon-bound Hanif Paribahan bus from Dhaka suffered a tire puncture in the Boubazar area under Narhatta union of Kahaloo upazila on Tuesday night. The bus was standing beside the Bogra-Naogaon highway when a truck coming from behind lost control and rammed into it. Both vehicles fell into a roadside ditch, leaving several people injured, including bus supervisor Uttam Mondal and truck helper Md Hridoy.
Fire service personnel rescued the injured and took them to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Uttam Mondal died while undergoing treatment around 4:15am on Wednesday, while Md Hridoy died around 8:15am.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, a sand-laden truck traveling from Bogra to Natore crashed into another stationary sand-filled truck at the Fakpal intersection in Nondigram upazila after the driver lost control around 6:15am. The front part of the truck was badly mangled, trapping driver Shamim Sheikh and helper Md Injamam inside.
Members of Nondigram Fire Service and Civil Defence rescued them and took them to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared truck helper Injamam dead.
Meanwhile, around midnight on Tuesday, factory worker Robiul Awal Zia was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the Bogra-Naogaon highway in the Bhyapra area under Narhatta union of Kahaloo upazila. He worked at the New Hope Feed Mill factory in the area.
Kahaloo Police Station Investigation Officer Mahbubur Rahman said the unidentified vehicle fled immediately after the accident. Efforts are underway to identify the vehicle and arrest its driver.
He added that the accident-hit bus and trucks have been seized, and separate cases have been filed under the Road Transport Act.
