NHRC: 576 convicts languish in Dhaka Jail after serving terms

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says 576 convicts are still confined at the Dhaka Central Jail even after completion of their sentences. After a visit to the jail on Thursday, NHRC chief Mizanur Rahman said these convicts had completed their terms between 2011 and 2015. “But they are still languishing in jail,” he told reporters. “It is a violation of their human rights.” Mizanur said they would inform the concerned authorities to look into the matter. He visited the central jail to see for himself if the recent spate of arrests have had any impact on the prison and to look into “certain allegations” but did not disclose them. Senior Jail Superintendent of Dhaka jail Jahangir Kabir said they had sent the Home Ministry a list of convicts who can be released. “They will be freed once we get the order from the ministry,” he added.More to follow...
