Garment factories in Savar and Ashulia have resumed operations after several days of tension and protests over wage demands, with most workers returning to their jobs peacefully on Sunday.
After six consecutive days of demonstrations, followed by the weekend and public holidays, workers began reporting to factories in the industrial areas on Sunday morning.
A visit to different industrial zones in Savar and Ashulia found workers arriving at their workplaces on time, with machinery running and production proceeding normally.
Although the situation has largely returned to normal, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to prevent further unrest. Additional personnel from police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other security agencies have been deployed at key locations and in front of factories.
However, production remains suspended at a few factories in Ashulia.
The affected factories include Medlar, The Rose, N-Boy, Niteshia and S21. Factory managements are holding discussions with worker representatives to facilitate the return of employees, according to reports.
Tarikul Islam, additional superintendent of police (Crime and Ops) for Dhaka district, said the overall law and order situation in the Savar-Ashulia industrial belt had returned to normal.
He said workers had returned to their jobs peacefully, following government directives and discussions with police.
Although a small number of factories may remain closed or face work stoppages, the overall situation in the industrial area is peaceful and stable, he added.
