Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury taken to DB for questioning

Police took Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury journalist and former information adviser to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to the Detective Branch (DB) on Wednesday for questioning over an unspecified incident.

He was taken to the DB office from the office of television channel DBC in Mohakhali around noon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter, saying Chowdhury had been brought in for questioning over what he described as an “untoward incident.”

Asked whether Chowdhury had been detained or arrested, Akhtar said he had not been detained or arrested and was being questioned about the incident.

He added that the DB had informed him only about Chowdhury being brought in for questioning.

However, DBC sources said DB officials also took 2 journalists from the newsroom.

DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said Chowdhury had not been detained. He said Chowdhury had gone to the DBC office, where an attempt was made to form a mob against him.

“On receiving the news, detective police went there, rescued him and brought him to the DB office,” he said, adding that Chowdhury was being questioned about why he had gone to the office, among other matters.

Asked whether anyone else had been brought in, Shafiqul said a DBC journalist named Rajib Ghosh was also at the DB office and was being questioned.
