Naval police chief: Police to file case if Tahsif’s family does not

The family of former flight lieutenant of Bangladesh Air Force KM Tahsif Sauri, has yet to file a case over his death, with police awaiting its decision.

However, if the family does not lodge a case, police will file one on their own initiative, Additional Inspector General of Police Md Rezaul Karim, chief of the Naval Police, has said.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Friday afternoon, he said police were waiting to see whether the family would take legal action. If not, police would file a case in accordance with the law.

He added that the Naval Police and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) were jointly investigating the incident.

“PBI has taken one person into custody for questioning. Some information has been obtained and is now being verified,” he said.

‘Why file a case when we have an excellent government?’ asks Tahsif’s father

KM Enayetul Karim, father of former Air Force officer Tahsif Sauri, has questioned the need for his family to file a case over his son's death, saying they do not want to get caught up in legal complications and repeated court visits.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, he said the family had yet to decide whether to file a case and would make a decision after discussing the matter among themselves.

“Why should we need to file a case? I believe the government will take responsibility and handle the matter with utmost sincerity. Filing a case in our country means a lot of hassle and repeated trips to court. Who wants to go through that when we have an excellent government?” he said.

He added that various government agencies were already working responsibly and actively on the matter.

Why a defence officer would run away from a police chase?

Tahsif’s father has also questioned the account given by his friend Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Dip claimed that on the night of the incident, they fled after spotting two men who appeared to be police officers at the scene.

Dismissing the claim as absurd, Enayetul Karim questioned why a defence officer would run away from a police chase.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, he said: “Isn't that an absurd statement? I don't think he had ever been to that area. A defence officer would flee because of a police chase? Isn't that ridiculous? It simply doesn't make sense.”

How Tahsif’s motorcycle was recovered

A black motorcycle has emerged as a key piece of evidence in the investigation into the death of Tahsif Sauri.

Acting on information provided by Tahsif’s friend Dip, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) recovered the motorcycle from the Mazar Basti area along the Turag River in Tongi.

According to the PBI, the motorcycle was found abandoned about 50 yards from the spot where Tahsif’s body was recovered.

PBI Dhaka Metro North Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Enayet Hossain Mannan disclosed the information to journalists on Friday.

PBI officials also visited the scene with Dip on the same day.
