Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Director Professor Kazi Ahmed Zaki has alleged that activists of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) assaulted him in his office.
The incident took place around 11am on Wednesday.
DAB Secretary General Zahirul Islam Shakil said IEDCR Director Professor Kazi Ahmed Zaki and Dr Zahid Hasan, the physician accused of being involved in the attack, are lifetime members of the organisation.
“We are looking into the matter,” he said.
Describing the incident as unjust, Shakil said DAB would adopt a zero-tolerance policy if its name or influence had been used to carry out the attack.
He added that organisational action would be taken against those involved.
IEDCR is a key government institution responsible for monitoring disease trends, conducting research and issuing public health alerts.
The institute also works with international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Professor Kazi Ahmed Zaki, a public health specialist, took charge as IEDCR director after the BNP formed the government. He recently conducted research on the effectiveness of measles vaccines.
