BNP nominates Eliza Zaman for reserved women’s seat

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated Eliza Zaman, a member of its central executive committee, for reserved women’s seat 23 in parliament, which fell vacant following the resignation of Ferdousi Ahmed Misty.

The nomination was announced in a notice signed by BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday afternoon, October 26.

Eliza Zaman had sought the party’s nomination to contest the 13th parliamentary election from Pirojpur-1, comprising Pirojpur, Nazirpur and Indurkani, with the party’s sheaf of paddy symbol. However, she was not nominated for the February 12 election.

Ferdousi Ahmed Misty resigned from parliament on October 1 on the prime minister’s instructions over allegations of involvement in an attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.

Following her resignation, the Election Commission (EC) began preparations for a by-election to the seat.

According to the schedule announced by the EC on October 12, October 26 is the deadline for submitting nomination papers. The schedule sets October 27 for scrutiny of nomination papers, November 1 for withdrawal of candidacies and November 2 for allocation of electoral symbols. The election is scheduled for November 12.

The BNP began distributing nomination forms on October 16 for the by-election. A total of 70 women collected the party’s forms, of whom 68 submitted applications.

Eliza Zaman is also associated with the Pirojpur district BNP and the central Mohila Dal.
