PM Tarique directs BNP to select suitable candidates for local elections

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed BNP leaders to select suitable candidates for the upcoming local government elections, stressing the importance of choosing candidates with strong public support and maintaining party unity.

Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni disclosed the directive while briefing reporters after a meeting of the BNP parliamentary party at the ruling party members’ room in the National Parliament Building on Sunday evening.

The meeting lasted nearly three hours, with the prime minister providing lawmakers with guidance on various issues related to the government and the party.

Moni said the prime minister had instructed lawmakers to remain united and choose the right leadership for the local elections. The BNP will field a single candidate in each constituency, he added.

He also said the government would remain accountable to the people for its activities.

The meeting also discussed maintaining party discipline, ensuring law and order, and preserving communal harmony during the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations. Lawmakers were instructed to play an active role in maintaining peace and taking action against those who violate the law.

The prime minister also stressed the need to prevent irregularities and misconduct by party members, amid allegations of extortion, land grabbing and other wrongdoing against some BNP leaders and activists.

The meeting also discussed constitutional amendments and the implementation of the July National Charter, with the government attaching importance to the ongoing reform process.

Lawmakers were also asked to monitor the electricity situation in their respective constituencies and work to improve services.

Moni said the next session of parliament would be held in November.
