Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government has decided to set up two new army camps in the hilly areas adjacent to the Rohingya camps to prevent crimes including abductions.
He made the remarks to journalists at the Secretariat around 3pm on Thursday, after a meeting titled “Meeting for the Overall Improvement of Law and Order in Jungle Salimpur, Chittagong.”
The home minister said the two camps would be established in the hills of Rangikhali and Noakhalipara in Teknaf under the leadership of the 10th Infantry Division of Ramu.
He said abductions and other incidents occur regularly in the two hilly areas. To prevent these crimes, a decision has been made to set up two camps in the area under the leadership of the 10th Infantry Division.
The meeting expressed the view that once the two camps are established, such crimes in the area will be eliminated.
He said joint operations are conducted to address the law and order situation inside and outside the Rohingya camps. These operations are being carried out against various crimes, including drugs, weapons and human trafficking.
A deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Armed Police Battalion leads the operations, with other law enforcement agencies also involved.
The home minister also mentioned a decision to rebuild the fencing, or barbed-wire barrier, to strengthen security at the Rohingya camps.
In addition, solar-powered lighting will be arranged outside the camps. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed at fixed intervals, and control towers and watchtowers will be built.
He further said that in the event of a war or any emergency, the army will lead the response. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been set for this purpose.
