Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) to investigate whether artificial shortages of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are being created anywhere in the country to sell it at higher prices.
He gave the instruction during an online meeting with DCs at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The minister said there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country. However, artificial shortages may be being created in some areas to sell LPG at higher prices.
He instructed the DCs to investigate why shortages are being reported in some areas despite normal supply and why consumers are being charged higher prices, and to submit reports with relevant information and evidence.
Iqbal Hasan Mahmud said necessary measures would be taken after receiving information from the DCs and holding meetings with importers and other relevant stakeholders. Steps would also be taken to increase supplies in areas where shortages are found.
The minister warned that action would be taken against those responsible if artificial shortages are created or LPG is sold above the prices set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
He also instructed the DCs to remain vigilant to ensure normal LPG supplies across the country.
