Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said he will personally look into allegations that a journalist’s accreditation card was cancelled for questioning the government.
He made the comment while responding to questions from journalists at the weekly briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room on Tuesday.
A journalist, referring to a recent media report, said a journalist’s accreditation card had been cancelled without the journalist or their organisation being informed of the reason.
The journalist questioned whether the decision was taken because the journalist had questioned the government.
“I don’t think this government would take any action simply because someone asked questions,” Zahed Ur Rahman said.
“You ask me questions every day. If asking questions were the reason, all of your cards would have been cancelled by now,” he added.
The adviser said the report had come to his attention and that he would investigate the matter.
“I will certainly find out why the card was cancelled and what happened. I will personally look into the matter as well,” he said.
He also claimed that the government has remained tolerant of criticism and questions, saying journalists’ right to question the government had not been restricted despite misinformation being spread about senior government officials.
