More than 12 years after Jubo Dal leader Mohammad Harunur Rashid was killed in police firing in Feni, his family has finally received a new home.
BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi handed over the keys to the newly built house to Harunur’s family at Jagatjibanpur in Farhadnagar Union of the district on Sunday.
His wife, Bibi Zohra, daughter Majeda Akter and son Touhidul Islam received the keys.
According to district BNP sources, Harunur was killed in police firing on December 4, 2013, amid tensions surrounding a BNP-led programme in support of a hartal on Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser Road in Feni town. He was then vice-president of the Farhadnagar Union Jubo Dal.
After his death, his wife and children endured years of hardship, including uncertainty over their livelihood and housing.
The new house was built in Jagatjibanpur under an initiative of “Amra BNP Poribar” to rehabilitate the family, following instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Construction began on April 12.
Speaking at the key handover ceremony, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi accused the previous Awami League government of enforced disappearances and killings.
“Sheikh Hasina did not hesitate to kill anyone to consolidate power. Enforced disappearances and killings continued for 17 years,” he said.
Local BNP leaders recalled Harunur’s political contributions and pledged to continue supporting his family.
The family expressed relief after finally receiving a secure home following years of housing difficulties, though the loss of their husband and father continues to leave a deep void in their lives.
After the ceremony, Rizvi visited Harunur’s grave and inaugurated the nameplate of the new house.
