A Dhaka court on Monday placed the prime accused, Zahurul, 32, on a five-day remand in a case over the beating death of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain, 58, in Savar’s Amin Bazar.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Siddika passed the order after a hearing on Monday afternoon.
Arif Hossain, a sub-inspector at the prosecution division, confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Zakir Al Ahsan of the Amin Bazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station, produced Zahurul before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
According to the remand plea, police sought to question the accused in custody to ensure a proper investigation, uncover the motive behind the killing, recover weapons used in the attack and identify others involved.
Defence lawyer Shafiuazzaman Swapan opposed the remand plea and sought its cancellation, while the prosecution argued in favour of police custody. After hearing both sides, the court granted Zahurul a five-day remand.
to the case statement, an altercation broke out around 7:30pm on September 5 over the parking of an auto-rickshaw in front of an auto garage in Savar’s Bardevi West Para.
Altaf allegedly came under attack while trying to stop the altercation. He took shelter at his son’s business establishment, Grand Fashion, but the accused allegedly stormed the shop around 8:10pm, armed with locally made weapons.
They allegedly beat Altaf with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks, leaving him critically injured. His son, Ariful Islam, was also allegedly attacked with sharp weapons while trying to save his father.
The attackers allegedly vandalised the establishment, causing damage estimated at Tk5 lakh, and stole Tk2.2 lakh from a cash box.
The injured father and son were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf dead. Ariful was admitted in critical condition.
Altaf’s wife, Mosammat Shiuli Parvin, later filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 people as accused.
