Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku is in stable condition after being admitted to hospital with fever, shortness of breath and a cough, hospital authorities said on Wednesday.
However, a medical board has advised him to remain in hospital for a few more days for further treatment and close monitoring.
The 76-year-old minister was taken to the emergency department of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute in the capital at around 9:40pm on Tuesday after developing fever, shortness of breath and a cough.
Initial examinations found that he was experiencing shortness of breath and had low blood oxygen levels. He was subsequently admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
In a statement, the hospital said doctors began treatment after reviewing the results of blood tests and a chest X-ray, which indicated pneumonia. A three-member medical board was immediately formed to oversee his treatment.
On Wednesday morning, a broader medical board comprising specialists from different disciplines was formed. His treatment is continuing in line with the board's recommendations, while further tests are being conducted as necessary.
Tuku has a history of diabetes and hypertension and recently underwent a procedure in Bangkok to have a stent placed in a coronary artery.
The medical board said he remains physically stable but will require a few more days in hospital for comprehensive treatment and close observation.
