Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has called for opposition cooperation to protect democracy and rebuild Bangladesh.
“The people have entrusted the BNP with running the country. Another party contested the election and is now in opposition, but did not attend our swearing-in ceremony or extend any cooperation. They are still threatening to launch a movement,” he said.
Anee made the remarks on Friday at an exchange meeting with beneficiaries of the SDF’s ‘Be Strong’ project in South Durgapur of Dighli Union under Chandraganj upazila in Lakshmipur.
He said the BNP had waged a 17-year movement against Sheikh Hasina and suffered losses during that period.
“Everyone joined the movement to save the country and protect democracy. Now our task is to safeguard those gains and build a new Bangladesh. We need the opposition’s cooperation for this,” he said.
Referring to the opposition’s long march and plans for further agitation, Anee said continued political unrest would hamper development.
“Such movements will harm both the local community and the country,” he said.
He alleged that the opposition was trying to weaken the BNP through street movements and urged everyone to remain united and work together to protect the government’s mandate.
Chandraganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nilufa Yasmin chaired the meeting, attended by local BNP leaders and officials, including Chandraganj police OC Abdur Rob, Upazila BNP President Belal Hossain and General Secretary Yusuf Bhuiyan.
