Prime Minister Tarique Rahman wants Bangladesh Television (BTV) to become a credible, modern channel and one that enjoys public trust, said BTV Director General Kazi Jesin.
Jesin was appointed BTV director general (Grade-1) on a contractual basis on August 6. She later met the prime minister and discussed his plans for the state-run broadcaster.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Jesin outlined the prime minister's vision for BTV.
She said BTV had lost viewers and was used as a propaganda tool by the ruling party during the Awami League government, adding that the broadcaster had not undergone significant changes even after the mass uprising.
According to Jesin, the prime minister wants BTV to regain public trust and become a credible broadcaster.
“No government in the history of Bangladesh has considered this issue with such importance. He has thought about it and taken the initiative to implement it,” she said.
Jesin also said that while many people had called for a “new settlement” after the mass uprising, the prime minister was working quietly to bring about meaningful changes.
“I was impressed by the prime minister’s plan for BTV. BTV will not just return to its previous place—the prime minister wants to see BTV in a more unique, modern and prestigious position,” she said.
Jesin acknowledged that rebuilding an old institution would be challenging.
“The work is difficult. It is undoubtedly not easier to rebuild an old institution than to build something new. But the work is also enjoyable. We have started working towards that goal,” she said.
She concluded by seeking everyone's support, cooperation and blessings.
