3 held over murder of Gazipur auto-rickshaw driver

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested three people in connection with the killing of a 60-year-old auto-rickshaw driver in Kapasia, Gazipur, allegedly to steal his battery-powered vehicle. The victim’s 75-year-old mother also died of cardiac arrest after learning about her son’s death.

The deceased, Ataur Rahman alias Ata Mia, was killed on Thursday near Mirzanagar Girls’ High School in Dakkhin Gaogaan under Sonmania union. He had left home around 4pm with his auto-rickshaw, worth about Tk1.4 lakh, to earn a living. The attackers allegedly strangled him with a rope and struck him with an iron rod and hammer before fleeing with the vehicle and his mobile phone.

According to Gazipur PBI Superintendent of Police Md Rakibul Akter, Ataur left home around 4pm on Thursday with his auto-rickshaw, worth around Tk1.4 lakh, to earn a living.

The arrested suspects are Rajib Khan, Nakibul Hasan Rakib, both from Kapasia, and Mohammad Kibria, owner of Al-Madina Enterprise at Hatirdia bus stand in Narsingdi’s Monohardi.

A case was filed with Kapasia Police Station on Friday. The PBI later took over the investigation and arrested Rajib and Rakib within 24 hours using digital forensic analysis and confidential information.

Following their information, investigators recovered the stolen auto-rickshaw from Al-Madina Enterprise and arrested Kibria for allegedly purchasing and keeping the stolen vehicle. The PBI also recovered Tk22,000 from its sale and the weapons and rope allegedly used in the killing. The suspects reportedly sold the vehicle for Tk42,000 and shared the money.

According to the PBI, Rajib and Rakib confessed under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, saying they planned the robbery because of debt and targeted Ataur because Rakib was distantly related to him.
