Police on Wednesday arrested the driver of a covered van three days after it ran over and killed an Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) student in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
The arrestee was identified as Md Limon Khan.
A team of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station arrested Limon from the Kuril Biswa Road area around 2:20pm.
Police also seized the covered van involved in the incident from the Sat Masjid area in Mohammadpur.
According to police, the victim, Oli Nur Mahmud, a fourth-year BBA student at IUB, was travelling by motorcycle on Sunday.
Around 9:52am on the day, he fell onto the road near the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after being obstructed by an unidentified auto-rickshaw.
A covered van approaching from behind ran over him, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
A case was subsequently filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by the victim’s father, Masih Uddin Mahmud.
Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said further legal proceedings against the arrested driver are currently underway.
