The 23rd presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 20, with three nomination papers submitted to the Election Commission (EC) ahead of the election.
Of the three nominations, two have been submitted for 11-party alliance candidate Oli Ahmad and one for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The EC will scrutinize the nomination papers from 10am on Sunday.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the scrutiny process would begin at 10am and include representatives from the Parliament Secretariat, who will verify the candidates’ signatures.
Regarding the two nomination papers submitted for Oli Ahmad, an EC official said: “It is not our matter. We will scrutinize them. If the first one is rejected, we will scrutinize the second one.”
Earlier, the deadline for submitting nomination papers ended at 4pm on Thursday, with three papers submitted in total.
President's resignation
Former president Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on July 24, citing “personal reasons.” He was the country’s 22nd president.
He submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, citing Article 50(3) of the Constitution.
Following his resignation, the EC began preparations for the presidential election and announced the election schedule on August 6.
According to the schedule, candidates can withdraw their nominations until 4pm on August 18. Voting, if required, will be held from 2pm to 5pm on August 20 in the session hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Both the BNP and the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance have fielded candidates. If more than one candidate is found eligible after scrutiny, the presidential election could see a competitive vote for the first time in 35 years.
