The government will present a 10-year plan to address the country’s energy crisis before parliament on August 27, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said on Saturday.
He made the remarks at a program at the T&T Colony field in Banani, Dhaka, where financial assistance was distributed among poor and disadvantaged people to mark the 82nd birth anniversary of late former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Tarique acknowledged that the country is facing a gas crisis while criticizing political leaders who, he said, were raising the issue without offering solutions.
“I saw another leader whose constituents are reportedly confronting him over the gas crisis. We are not denying that there is a gas problem,” he said.
He said BNP has a plan to address the problems faced by the people.
“At the parliamentary session that begins on the 27th, we will present before the people how we plan to solve the country’s energy crisis over the next 10 years,” the prime minister said.
He also challenged other political parties to come up with alternative plans to resolve the crisis.
“Today, I want to tell all these political parties clearly: if you believe you have a responsibility toward the people, bring forward a plan,” he said.
“If your plan can solve the problem within the next three months, I will accept it. I am throwing down a challenge to them.”
Tarique said he was giving political parties another three months to come up with solutions.
“Let them bring a plan that is better than the government’s. I am giving them another three months. If they can solve the problem within six months, I will implement every plan,” he said.
“But if they are saying these things only to mislead the people, they must apologize to the people,” he added.
