Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is working to build Bangladesh as a democratic and welfare-oriented state, with efforts underway to rebuild sectors devastated over the past one and a half decades.
“For more than a decade and a half, the fascist government destroyed the country’s education, healthcare, economy and other sectors. Now it is time to rebuild them,” he said. “We are continuing our efforts towards that goal. We believe the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will play an indispensable role in the country’s rebuilding journey.”
The prime minister made the remarks on Monday afternoon while inaugurating three SDG villages under the SDG Village Pilot Programme at the China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
Joining the event virtually, he formally inaugurated the three villages, Mitingachhari in Kaptai, Rangamati; Pankhali in Dacope, Khulna; and Nafanagar in Bochaganj, Dinajpur.
Tarique Rahman said no single ministry or department can achieve the SDG targets alone, stressing the need for cooperation from all relevant stakeholders.
He said the government’s people-oriented policies are aligned with the SDG principle of “leaving no one behind.” The government’s policy is “Bangladesh for All,” aimed at safeguarding the interests of people from all walks of life.
The prime minister said Bangladesh had demonstrated significant success in implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is similarly taking appropriate measures to effectively implement the SDGs.
Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury also attended the event.
