Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the government had appointed a law firm to seek cancellation of the bail granted to former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Responding to questions from journalists at Rajshahi Police Lines on Sunday afternoon, Salahuddin Ahmed said he had learned about the bail while attending a program and immediately contacted the home secretary, who subsequently spoke with Bangladesh's ambassador in Dubai.
The minister said: “I just heard this while sitting on the stage. I immediately spoke to the home secretary. The home secretary has spoken to our ambassador in Dubai.”
He said the government had appointed a law firm a few days earlier specifically to deal with the matter and instructed it to pursue cancellation of the bail.
Salahuddin Ahmed said: “A few days ago, we appointed a law firm solely for this matter. They have been instructed to pursue cancellation of the bail. I have received information that he has been granted bail on condition that he does not leave the UAE. I have asked for the certified copy to know the exact conditions, and we have instructed the law firm we appointed to pursue cancellation of this bail.”
Asked about Bangladesh's next course of action, the minister said the government would continue its legal efforts to secure Benazir Ahmed's return.
He said: “He (Benazir Ahmed) went there legally. We have appointed a law firm. We are making our efforts. We hope we will be able to cancel the bail and bring him back within a short time.”
Earlier, the home minister attended an exchange meeting with officers and force members of Rajshahi Range Police and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police at Rajshahi Police Lines.
