Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman on Tuesday said the government has received no information from the relevant authorities confirming allegations that the Coast Guard was involved in the disappearance of Miraj Sheikh from Mongla in Bagerhat.
However, he said locating the missing man remains the government's responsibility, regardless of whether any law enforcement agency was involved.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at the government's weekly media briefing at the Department of Information conference room at the Secretariat.
"The family says a man is missing. It is the government's responsibility to thoroughly examine the allegation and keep the family regularly informed about the progress," he said.
The adviser also said the relevant ministry should issue an official statement on the matter, adding that he would discuss the issue with the ministry again.
He, however, urged against describing the incident as an enforced disappearance before the investigation is completed, stressing that the facts must first be established.
The adviser also said enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings should have no place in Bangladesh.
