Phone line, security in place as Shahabuddin prepares to leave

A new telephone line is being installed at the Gulshan residence where outgoing President Mohammed Shahabuddin is expected to move after leaving Bangabhaban.

On Friday afternoon, employees of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) arrived to install the connection.

According to security guards at the building, Shahabuddin is expected to reside on the fifth floor after stepping down. They said he visited the residence 3 to 4 days ago, accompanied by more than 100 people, including members of law enforcement agencies.

Sources said minor renovation and other preparation work at the residence has already been completed. Several members of the Special Branch (SB) are also stationed there.

Abdur Razzak, a Telecommunications Mechanic (TCM) at Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), said the installation was being carried out following official instructions. He said: “We have officially been sent here to install a new telephone line. The previous line was disconnected after he became President. Therefore, we are now installing a new one.”

President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office, and his resignation letter was accepted by Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. The letter was submitted to the speaker on Friday.

In the resignation letter, Shahabuddin said he was stepping down due to serious illness.
