Intelligence officials have detained a passenger at the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after recovering 720 grams (about 61 bhori) of gold concealed in a special compartment.
The suspect was detained around 12pm on Thursday and later handed over to the Airport Police Station, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Islam Talukder confirmed.
According to sources, acting on a tip-off, intelligence officials learned that a passenger on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines domestic flight from Chittagong was expected to receive a gold consignment from a passenger arriving from Dubai. The domestic passenger was allegedly planning to leave the airport through the domestic terminal after collecting the gold.
Based on the intelligence, security officials intensified surveillance at the airport and identified the suspect as Mohammad Alauddin. A search led to the recovery of 720 grams of powdered gold, ingeniously concealed on his person.
Legal action has been initiated in connection with the incident.
