Woman killed in Cox’s Bazar landslide

A 35-year-old woman was killed in a landslide in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday night. The victim was identified as Rozina Akter. Her husband, Mujibur Rahman, and their three young children narrowly escaped unharmed.

According to local residents, the incident occurred at Jhirjhiripara on the Marine Drive. Two units of Fire Service and Civil Defence, assisted by community members, worked for nearly one and a half hours to remove the debris. Rozina’s body was recovered around 11pm.

Syed Mohammad Morshed Alam, deputy assistant director of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Ali of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station said that heavy rain had been affecting the area since Saturday morning. At around 9:30pm, a section of a hill collapsed onto the family's semi-pucca tin-roofed house, destroying the kitchen. Rozina was inside the kitchen at the time and became trapped under the debris.

Firefighters rescued her and rushed her to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
