Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir said Purbachal New Town Project will become the “new Dhaka” with four police stations, 41 police boxes and other major policing facilities under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The IGP made the remarks while inaugurating the newly built Borkau Police Camp at the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk)-developed Purbachal New Town Project on Wednesday.
He said the inauguration of the Borkau Police Camp marked the formal beginning of policing activities in Purbachal and would play a vital role in developing the township into a planned, safe, and modern city.
To strengthen law and order in the area, the government has taken a policy decision to establish four police stations, six investigation centres and two police lines under the DMP. Work is also underway to set up three deputy commissioner (DC) offices, while the process of establishing 41 police boxes across different sectors of the township is progressing.
The IGP said the Ministry of Home Affairs had granted administrative approval for the police stations and investigation centres, recognizing the importance of ensuring security in the rapidly developing residential project.
He said Rajuk has decided to allocate 29.21 acres of land to Bangladesh Police in phases. Registration of 18.63 acres has already been completed, while the remaining land is in the process of being registered.
Ali Hossain Fakir said Purbachal will eventually be brought under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police as a separate division, similar to other DMP divisions, to be supervised by an additional police commissioner.
He added that a proposal to create around 6,524 police posts for the Purbachal New Town Project is currently under consideration.
The police chief said the establishment of the Borkau Police Camp reflected the government's long-term vision for Purbachal, adding that the expansion of Dhaka through the new township would not only increase the capital's size but also ensure better civic services and a well-organized law enforcement system, contributing to urbanization and economic growth.
The IGP said a stronger police presence would accelerate the area's development while enhancing public confidence and security.
He said initially, two police camps will be established in Purbachal. One of them, the Borkau Purbachal Police Camp in Sector 1, was inaugurated on Wednesday, while the second is expected to open within two months. Additional police stations and investigation centres will be set up in phases.
