Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday said the documents seeking former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed's return had already been sent to the UAE authorities following his arrest in Dubai, but no response had yet been received from the Emirati government.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after attending a program organized by the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
Salahuddin Ahmed said the government had already sent all necessary documents through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said: "We have not yet received any response from the UAE government. We hope they will inform us soon."
Responding to a question about the progress of the process, the home minister said Bangladeshi authorities had been informed by email about the arrest and were asked to submit the required documents within 30 days.
He said the government completed the process within three days.
Asked whether reports that Benazir Ahmed was carrying another country's passport could complicate the process, Salahuddin Ahmed said: "We are still waiting for the UAE government's reply. According to the latest information we have, he is in the custody of the federal police. We have no new information beyond that."
News of the arrest of former IGP and former director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Benazir Ahmed, in Dubai became public on June 14. On the same day, Salahuddin Ahmed informed the National Parliament about the matter.
