Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the holy Ashura serves as a reminder that the core teachings of Islam are founded on peace, justice, compassion and the welfare of humanity, stressing that there is no place for division, conflict, hatred or social discord in the religion.
In a message issued on Thursday on the eve of Holy Ashura, to be observed on Friday, the Prime Minister called on people to draw inspiration from the enduring lessons of Ashura and work towards strengthening social harmony, mutual respect, tolerance and brotherhood.
He also urged the nation to dedicate itself further to building a just, peaceful and welfare-oriented society.
Tarique Rahman said the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is observed as Holy Ashura, one of the most significant days in Islamic history. He noted that the occasion is not confined to mourning and remembrance alone; rather, it embodies the timeless values of truth, justice, patience, sacrifice and moral courage.
“The tragedy of Karbala remains an unforgettable chapter in human history that continues to inspire people across generations to stand firmly for truth and against injustice and oppression,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the lessons of Karbala upholding human dignity, justice and unwavering commitment to ideals remain a source of inspiration for all humanity.
Recalling the historic events of Karbala, he said that nearly 1,400 years ago, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), along with his family members and loyal companions, embraced martyrdom rather than submitting to tyranny, injustice and oppression. His supreme sacrifice transformed Karbala into an enduring symbol of the struggle for truth and justice.
In his message, Tarique Rahman paid profound tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and expressed deep respect for the sacred memory of his family members and companions who were martyred in the tragedy of Karbala.
