Police to investigate how Shahbagh protester injured his eye

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia has said they will investigate the Shahbagh clash where a student suffered serious eye injuries. “Police and students are making contradictory claims over the incident. Protesters said Titumir College student Siddiqur Rahman was hit by a teargas canister but police said he was injured when the protesters threw bricks and stones,” Asaduzzaman said. The DMP boss made the remarks at a vehicle handover programme at DMP headquarters in Dhaka on Saturday.

He claimed police had repeatedly requested the agitating students to move away from Shahbagh but the latter ignored the calls and caused public sufferings. Police lobbed teargas canisters only when the protesters tried to vandalise police vehicles. “We will investigate the incident and take action accordingly,” the DMP chief said. Students of seven government colleges, which have been recently affiliated with the Dhaka University, demonstrated on Thursday demanding that the dates for their pending MA and Honour’s exams be announced. At least two students were injured in a clash with police.
