A fire that broke out in the generator of a palm oil-laden tanker at the outer anchorage of Port of Chittagong on Thursday morning was brought under control after nearly four hours.
The blaze erupted around 7:30am aboard the tanker MT Meghna Trader, which was carrying palm oil from Indonesia.
Port authorities and the Coast Guard said firefighting efforts began immediately after the incident was reported, with assistance from the Navy, Coast Guard and port tugboats. The fire in the generator room was brought under control by around 11:30am.
In a statement, Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam said Coast Guard firefighting and rescue teams worked continuously following the outbreak of the fire.
According to port sources, the tanker named MT Meghna Trader arrived at the outer anchorage on May 26 carrying 11,500 tonnes of palm oil from Indonesia. More than half of the cargo had already been unloaded before the incident occurred.
After the fire broke out, all crew members were safely evacuated from the tanker’s generator room.
