Jamaat slams Islami Bank chairman appointment

The newly appointed chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC is a “notorious collaborator of the ruling Awami fascists,” Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has alleged.

The party has also sharply criticised the appointment and termed it politically motivated interference in the banking sector.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar made these comments in a statement issued on Monday.

In the statement, Mia Golam Parwar said: “We are observing with concern that the government is making one reckless decision after another, pushing the country’s banking system and financial sector into risk.”

He said: “Yesterday (Sunday), the managing director of Islami Bank was forced to resign. The chairman was also removed to create cracks in public trust. In this situation, strong anger and dissatisfaction have arisen among millions of customers and the general public.

"We are also deeply concerned that the person appointed as the new chairman of Islami Bank is a known collaborator of the fugitive Awami fascists. Appointing such a person is like inviting a crocodile by digging a canal.”

He added: “Without taking effective action against those who have looted around Tk250,000 crore from the banking sector, instead allowing them to remain beyond reach and paving the way for further looting, a former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank—removed after the 2024 mass uprising—has been appointed as chairman of Islami Bank. We strongly condemn and protest this move by the government and Bangladesh Bank, and demand his removal.”

He said: “To restore discipline in the financial sector, the incompetent and partisan governor of Bangladesh Bank must be removed, looted money must be recovered, and a competent and honest individual should be appointed as chairman. The board of Islami Bank should be reconstituted with qualified, skilled, honest, and Islamic banking-experienced individuals. Otherwise, the government will have to bear responsibility for the consequences of the situation.”

Khurshid Alam, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank, has been appointed as the new chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC. On Sunday.

Bangladesh Bank appointed him as an independent director and chairman of the bank.
