BNP Standing Committee Member and Reserved Seat MP Selima Rahman on Friday expressed hope that justice in the murder of seven-year-old child would be delivered swiftly.
She made the remarks after visiting the victim’s residence in Pallabi on Friday afternoon, accompanied by members of the Women and Children Rights Forum.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken responsibility for ensuring justice in the girl’s murder. As the state has assumed responsibility, we hope the trial will be completed very soon. This will help restore public confidence,” she said.
During the visit, Selima Rahman consoled the grieving parents.
The forum also extended financial assistance to the victim’s family and assured them of continued support in the future.
Earlier on Thursday night, the prime minister visited the slain girl’s residence, where he met her parents, offered condolences, and pledged a speedy trial. He also promised to take full responsibility for the well-being of the girl’s elder sister.
According to police, the victim child's body was recovered on Tuesday morning from beneath a bed inside a neighbour’s flat. Her severed head was later found in a bathroom. A murder case was subsequently filed at Pallabi Police Station.
Law enforcement officials first detained the wife of the prime accused, identified as Swapna Akter. Later, the main suspect, Sohel Rana, was arrested in connection with the case. He was subsequently produced before a court, where he reportedly gave a confessional statement admitting to the rape and killing of the child.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage across Bangladesh, with human chains, protest rallies and demonstrations held in Dhaka and several districts, demanding swift justice and the maximum punishment for those involved.
