The BNP-backed panel has won a sweeping victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election for the 2026–27 session, securing 13 out of 14 posts, according to official results.
Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon was elected president, while Mohammad Ali was elected secretary, both from the same panel.
Election Sub-Committee Convener Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury announced the results around 2:00am on Thursday.
Out of 11,097 registered voters, 4,048 lawyers cast their ballots in the two-day election. Of them, 1,771 votes were cast on the first day and 2,277 on the second day.
Other winners from the BNP-backed panel include Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan, who were elected vice-presidents; Md Ziaur Rahman, treasurer; and Maksud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul, joint secretaries.
The elected executive members are Barrister H M Sanzid Siddiqui, A K M Azad Hossain, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.
The only post won outside the BNP-backed panel went to Md Azim Uddin Patwari of the Jamaat-backed panel.
This year’s election was held after a gap of nearly two years following the fall of the Awami League government.
Three panels contested the election: the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Panel, the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Ainjibi Oikya Panel, and the National Citizen Party (NCP)-backed Lal-Shobuj Panel.
Although Awami League-backed candidates had submitted nominations, they were ultimately barred from contesting following objections from lawyers and written appeals linked to the July mass uprising.
The NCP-backed panel fielded a partial slate, while several candidates also ran as independents.
In the previous SCBA election held in March 2024, Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon was elected president from the BNP-backed panel, while Shah Manjurul Haque from the Awami League-backed panel won the post of secretary.
