Police Week 2026 begins Sunday; PM to inspect parade

Police Week 2026 begins on Sunday with a four-day program running through May 13 under the slogan: “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh Above All.”

The event will formally open in the morning with the annual police parade at Rajarbagh Police Lines ground. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inspect the parade and take the salute. He is also scheduled to address police personnel.

Messages on the occasion of Police Week have been issued by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir.

In his message, President Shahabuddin said the stability, good governance and development of a state largely depend on the integrity, dedication, professionalism and discipline of the police force. He said the impartial, professional and people-friendly role of police is especially important during national events and critical times.

He noted that Bangladesh Police recently played a “honest and efficient role” in ensuring the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the 13th National Election, and expressed gratitude to all members of the force.

The president also said crimes are becoming increasingly complex in the era of information technology, with cyberspace, AI and deepfake technologies being used for misinformation, character assassination, public disorder, financial fraud, militancy, drug trafficking and human trafficking.

He stressed training in modern technologies, including AI, data analytics, CCTV surveillance and digital forensics. He also underscored transparency, accountability, community policing, a service-oriented approach and respect for human rights to strengthen police-public relations.

In his message, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is implementing programs aimed at building a prosperous, self-reliant, justice-based, democratic and humane state. However, he said achieving these goals would be difficult without ensuring public safety.

He said restoring public confidence in the police and improving law and order are top priorities. He added that police development is closely linked to law enforcement, crime prevention and national progress, and described investment in the force as essential for public security.

He also emphasized stronger action against mob violence, juvenile gangs and narcotics trafficking.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said every police member must be inspired by professionalism and become a symbol of public trust. He said victims must receive maximum support in accessing legal services, while ensuring that no innocent person is harassed and that actual offenders are brought to justice.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Monjur Morshed Chowdhury praised the police for their dedication, professionalism and sacrifice in maintaining law and order, preventing crime and ensuring public safety. He said there is no alternative to an effective, modern and people-friendly police force in maintaining national stability.

IGP Md. Ali Hossain Fakir said efforts are underway to make police services more people-friendly, dynamic and accountable through technological upgrading and modernization of the force.

He said this year’s slogan reflects the force’s commitment to public service, adding: “As the people’s police, we want to serve the public with sincerity and dedication.”

The annual parade will be commanded by Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar, with participation from multiple contingents.

During the parade ceremony, officers will receive the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) and the President Police Medal (PPM) for bravery and service in 2025. The BPM (Service) and PPM (Service) will also be awarded for contributions in major case resolution, crime control, professionalism, dedication, honesty and disciplined conduct. The Prime Minister will present the medals.

The ceremony will be attended by ministers, members of parliament, the Inspector General of Police, foreign diplomats, senior police officials, metropolitan police commissioners, range DIGs, district superintendents of police and other distinguished guests.

National newspapers will publish special supplements on Police Week, while television channels will air special programs. Key roads and traffic islands in the capital will be decorated for the occasion.

Major programs include visits to the Bangladesh Police Women Welfare Association (PUNAK) stall, welfare parades, award distribution ceremonies, the IGP’s badge presentation, shield parade, recovery awards for arms and narcotics, and meetings involving the Home Affairs Adviser, ministers from various ministries and police leadership.

Activities from the past year will be reviewed during the week, and plans for the coming year will be finalized. Police Week 2026 concludes on May 13.
