AL leader in hiding for long time arrested

A senior leader of the Bangladesh Awami League and former Upazila Parishad chairman Abdul Hai Khokon, 46, has been arrested in Dhunat upazila of Bogra district.

Police from Dhunat Police Station detained him late Friday night from the Ashulia bypass area in the capital.

According to police and local sources, Abdul Hai Khokon is the son of the late Habibur Rahman Akand of Sonargaon village under Chikashi Union in Dhunat upazila.

He previously served as the senior vice president of the Dhunat Upazila Awami League and was also the former chairman of the Dhunat Upazila Parishad. He had earlier held the position of general secretary of the same political unit.

Sources said that following the political developments on August 5, 2024, a series of cases were filed against him, after which he went into hiding and reportedly stayed at different locations to avoid arrest.

Police said that on Friday night, Khokon was present in the Ashulia bypass area of Dhaka. At that time, he was allegedly detained by individuals identifying themselves as political opponents and handed over to Ashulia Police Station.

Dhunat Police were subsequently informed and later took him into custody, bringing him to Bogra.

Authorities stated that Khokon is accused in 11 cases, including charges of murder, attempted murder, explosives-related offences, sabotage, and fraud.

Officer-in-Charge of Dhunat Police Station Atiqul Islam confirmed that Khokon was produced before the court and sent to Bogra jail in connection with the cases.
