Five of a family slaughtered in Gazipur; husband absconding

Five members of a family were allegedly murdered by having their throats slit at a rented house in Rautkona (East Para) village of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur early Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Sharmin, wife of Forkan Mia; her brother Rosul; and the couple’s three daughters — Mim, Habiba, and Faria.

According to police and family members, the incident took place sometime during the night after the family had dinner and gone to sleep. Forkan Mia, who worked as a private car driver, has been missing since the incident and is suspected of involvement in the killings.

Additional Superintendent of Police Asaduzzaman said police initially suspect that Forkan himself carried out the murders.

“It is primarily suspected that the householder Forkan Mia himself committed these murders. There are allegations that he slaughtered his three children, wife, and brother-in-law. Forkan has been absconding since the incident,” he said.

Sakib, a nephew of the deceased Sharmin, said Forkan had called Rosul to the house on Friday evening with the promise of arranging a job for him. He added that family members discovered the bodies in the morning after receiving a phone call from Sharmin’s father, Shahadat Molla.

“When I arrived at the house around 7am, I saw the bodies of Rosul, Sharmin, and the three children lying on the floor,” Sakib said.

The family had reportedly been living as tenants in the house of expatriate Monir Hossain in Rautkona village.
