PM visits Sylhet, offers prayers at Shah Jalal Shrine

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the Shah Jalal Shrine in Sylhet amid heavy rain on Saturday, entering the shrine at around 10:30am.

After offering prayers, he laid the foundation stone of a beautification project undertaken by Sylhet City Corporation at Chandni Ghat in the city. At around 11:15am, he joined a civic gathering organized by the city corporation.

Earlier, at around 10am, a flight of US-Bangla Airlines carrying the prime minister landed at Osmani International Airport.

He was received at the airport by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Labour and Expatriates’ Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Quiyum Choudhury, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Moshiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Sarwar Alam, and other senior officials.

This is the prime minister’s first visit to Sylhet since assuming office. According to the schedule, he began the day’s program with the shrine visit.

Other engagements include laying the foundation stone of a project at Chandni Ghat on the bank of the Surma River to address waterlogging in the city, and attending a civic reception. Later, at 12pm, he will inaugurate the re-excavation of the Baisha River in Kandigaon under Sadar upazila.

In the afternoon, at 3pm, the prime minister will inaugurate Notun Kuri Sports at Sylhet District Stadium. At 5pm, he will attend a party meeting at the Sylhet District Shilpakala Academy. He is scheduled to return to Dhaka by air at 7pm after concluding the day’s visit.
